There are brewing methods that define an era. In the world of specialty coffee, the V60 has become an absolute reference — almost a rite of passage.
Minimalist in appearance yet demanding in practice, the V60 is often considered the ultimate test of a coffee’s quality.
Where some brewing methods forgive imperfections, the V60 reveals everything: the terroir, the roast, the grind… and the mistakes.
A simple invention, maximum precision
The V60 was developed by the Japanese brand Hario with a clear idea: to create a percolation tool that offers complete control over extraction, without unnecessary complexity.
Its design is built around three fundamental elements:
• a 60° conical shape
• a large opening at the bottom
• internal spiral ridges that promote airflow and flow rate
Together, these elements transform a simple action, pouring water, into a truly technical gesture.
Why the V60 became an icon of specialty coffee
The V60 has established itself in the specialty coffee world because it embodies its core values:
• precision
• transparency
• respect for the product
• reproducibility
• faithful expression of terroir
It is a method that does not attempt to correct coffee — it translates it.
An exceptional coffee will shine. An average coffee will be ruthlessly exposed.
Pure percolation: gravity as the driving force
Unlike the AeroPress (which combines immersion and pressure), the V60 works purely through gravity-driven percolation. Water passes through the coffee bed under the force of gravity, gradually extracting soluble compounds.
This dynamic produces:
• a very clean cup
• clear, readable acidity
• high aromatic precision
• light body but great definition
This clarity is precisely why the V60 is often the preferred tool for analyzing a coffee’s profile.
V60 and terroir: the method of transparency
The V60 excels with:
• African coffees (Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda)
• washed lots
• light roasts
• coffees with floral, citrus, or red-fruit profiles
It highlights:
• natural acidity
• aromatic complexity
• fermentation character
• the structural balance of the coffee
The V60 hides nothing. It tells the story of the coffee exactly as it is.
The V60 is a demanding method — sometimes frustrating — but deeply honest. It reminds us of a fundamental truth of specialty coffee: Mastery of the gesture is just as important as the quality of the bean.
